Random Randomness Open Thread with Eco News Roundup

Here's the Eco News Roundup, with an assist from Patriot Daily.

  • Senator Barbara Boxer aims to pass climate bill as "early as next week". The Republicans have announced their alternative plan
    threatened to boycott.

A historic worldwide deliberative survey represents a milestone in democracy at the global level and a challenge to pessimists who say it’s impossible to negotiate a new international climate change treaty this year.

  • "TPM: Yes Man: Chamber Lawsuit Is "A Comedy And A Travesty".
  • The financial cost of doing nothing about climate change has been calculated for the state of Montana.

But if US wind turbine manufacturers want another foreign renewables contingent to worry about, there’s always the Europeans. A study by non-profit group the Investigative Reporting Workshop found that 84 per cent of the $1.05bn handed out by the US government since September 1 has gone to foreign companies - mostly European.

  • Glenn Beck wants to save America from Meatless Mondays. I can't help but think that if he didn't have a television show, he would be somewhere conjuring up balloon boy hoaxes.

latest sinkhole news

Well, not quite yet. I have been forgetting to read our local newspaper again, and imagine my surprise at finding out the 30 year old I&W brine well at the intersection of route 285 and 62/180 is collapsing.

Route 285 is the main N/S drag through SE New Mexico. We've had a couple of sinkholes at brine well sites in the area during the last year, but nothing in town, let alone next to a major interstate (oh, and also the unlined irrigation canal, to make matters more interesting).

Sinkholes can form suddenly and eat goodly chunks of land, not to mention vehicles and humans. Lots of karst in the area.

Looking at the articles on the fire departments webpage http://www.carlsbadnm.com/fire/
it's clear they think there's a goodly chance this puppy is going to collapse.

Just more good clean mining fun, I guess.

Glenn Beck really is the 4th largest greenhouse gas emitter

in the United States. How is it that he has a job?

Thanks for the roundup.

Re: Glenn Beck really is the 4th largest greenhouse gas ...

Only the 4th largest emitter? At least he's got room to grow, and I think if anyone can rise to the occasion, it's GB.
